Pregnancy can be difficult. Some women have trouble conceiving, while others experience significant discomfort during pregnancy or after the birth. For my patients who are pregnant, want to become pregnant or have recently gone through a pregnancy, I often suggest acupuncture as an additional supportive treatment.
Acupuncture is an increasingly popular treatment that originates from the practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Similar to chiropractic, acupuncture focuses on getting the body back into alignment—a state where everything is in its right place and working as it should be. However, where chiropractic treats the physical structure of the body, specifically the spine, acupuncture works strictly on an energetic level. The goal of acupuncture is to support the smooth flow of life energy through the body, and remove any blocks to that flow.
An acupuncture treatment involves inserting tiny needles into points on the skin in order to relax the body and promote the free flow of life energy. This may sound painful, but it isn’t! The needles are hair thin — much thinner than the shots you get at your regular doctor’s office — and you likely won’t feel them at all. Most people experience a state of deep calm while undergoing an acupuncture session.
Acupuncture can be highly effective in treating the difficulties that result from pregnancy and also fertility issues. Because it works on the energetic level, it doesn’t interfere with other medical treatments you may be receiving. Acupuncture focuses on activating the body’s own healing abilities; it helps give your body the energy it needs to function properly. Much like chiropractors, acupuncturists believe that the body has an incredible ability to heal itself when properly supported.
For my patients and others in the Northern Virginia and DC area, I highly recommend working with my colleague Njemile Carol Jones, an acupuncturist who specializes in fertility and pregnancy. Njemile has almost twenty years experience practicing acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. I first came into contact with her several years ago, when one of my patients was struggling with insufficient amniotic fluid. She started working with Njemile, and was amazed at the results! I’ve been regularly referring my patients ever since.
